Father's Day 2016 and here are some stellar events, places, pick-your-own venues to help honor the adult male in your life for those fortunate enough to have him – or honor his memory for those who do not any longer. And for anyone absent a father, choose to be a good role model if he was not – someone loved you enough to help you grow – and gender doesn't matter, nor does age.

Walk in the footsteps of history – talk about the founding fathers (and of the many unseen supportive mothers beside and behind them) and choose any portion of the 27-mile W3R National Historic Trail from Providence to Newport, Rhode Island. The National Historic Trail can be followed in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, – and of course, Virginia to Yorktown, where the “world turned upside down.”

On June 18,1781, French forces led by Viscomte de Rochambeau marched out of Providence – on the trail to the October Victory at Yorktown, Virginia, in our War for Independence. Information linked here. As George Washington is the father of our country, this gathering is inspiring for many reasons. A portion of the trail explored on any given day will add to your own understanding of the USA; trails are open year-round.

Remember, veterans get in free (with ID) at the Goshen Stampede – ongoing all weekend with rodeo action, demolition derby, trucks pulls, food, activities for all ages, family-oriented.

Quechee Hot Air Balloon, Craft and Music Festival, ongoing to Sunday, June 19. Tethered rides, music, craft artisans, vendors. Children’s activities. Pick your own – berries – find a field nearby by consulting the official CT PYO listings, linked here. Make a day of it, bring water, snacks, hand wipes. Make dad some pancakes for Father's Day, accompanied by some real maple syrup, a bowl of ripe strawberries on the side and a cup of steaming hot strong coffee.

Hartford Blooms Garden Tours showcase gardens and historic architecture – ongoing through Sunday, June 19. Fee, $15. For information, go to hartfordblooms.org.

The Chas. C. Hart Company history is displayed on this sign in Old Wethersfield, Connecticut, part of the Wethersfield Heritage Walk. Through a partnership between the Town of Wethersfield, the Wethersfield Tourism Commission, the Wethersfield Historical Society, the Webb Deane Stevens Museum and a group of dedicated residents and volunteers the walk is reality. Go see the series of outdoor interpretive exhibit kiosks and wayside panels that are a self-guided walking/biking tour of the historic district. This project was recommended in the Old Wethersfield Master Plan prepared for the Town in 2008. Funding for the design and implementation of the project has been generously provided through two grants from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and Connecticut Humanities Council. The exhibits are being designed to tell the story of the nearly 400-year history of the town. Go take a look – and by the way, there is a small retail shop at the rear of The Hart Seed Company brick building where you can purchase seed packets galore to take home and plant to connect your life with the decades of human history here.
